Hughie featured twice as a trialist in December 1951 in league games against Dundee Utd and Dunfermline Athletic, the latter resulting in a 5-3 win and Hughie getting a goal which saw him signed up after the game from Duntocher Hibs. He was our regular centre forward for the rest of the 1951-52 season, not missing a game, and he continued as our first-choice centre throughout the following campaign. He had spells out of the team during the first half of the 1953-54 season, with Kenny Malcolm being preferred, before coming back into the team and not missing a game from early January onwards.
He rejected the offer of a new contract in May 1954 due to the travelling from his home in Alexandria, and after staying on our retained list a move was agreed for him to join Dumbarton in late August, where he had been training previously. While at Dumbarton, he scored an incredible 205 goals in 231 appearances, with four of those goals coming in an incredible game against us in November 1958, where despite scoring four Hughie ended up on the losing side, with Dave Easson scoring five for us in a 5-4 win at Gayfield.
