Biography

Derek was initially called up from Arbroath Lads Club in March 1988 by John Young and the 16-year-old featured in three games before the end of the season, signing his first professional a few weeks after the campaign was completed. He made two competitive appearances the following season before being given a run of games in January – March 1990 but he lost the number 1 jersey to Derek Jackson late on in the campaign. He competed with Jackson throughout the following season coming in and out of the team several times and he started off the 1991-92 season as first choice before the signing of Mike Harkness in mid-October 1991 saw him return to second choice.

He again started the 1992-93 campaign as first choice before Harkness returned to the team in mid-September and after dropping out the team he put in a transfer request. Shortly after this he went on to join Arbroath Sporting Club on a delayed transfer, before leaving permanently at the end of that season. In March 1994, Brechin City signed Derek and he made 41 appearances for the Glebe Park side.
