After eight full seasons at the club, George was given a benefit match against Dundee in August 1909. However, just two months later he began to lose his regular place in the team to his younger brother John who had recently been signed by the club. George continued to fill in several roles through the 1909-10 season, but he never regained his place, and he left the club at the end of that campaign.
