He immediately featured in pre-season friendlies and made his debut for the club in mid-August 1984 against Montrose. The following campaign he established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet aged just 17, making 43 appearances and scoring 15 goals. Early in the 1986-87 season he suffered a bad knee injury which saw him miss the first four months of the campaign before he returned in late November and his impressive performances saw St. Mirren sign him in June 1987.

After St. Mirren Mark spent time with Partick Thistle, Coleraine and Ballymena Utd before returning to Gayfield just prior to the start of the 1996-97 season. He spent three further seasons at the club, appearing regular in the first two but persistent knee injuries saw him miss the majority of the 1998-99 campaign and he left the club that summer to join local side Arbroath Vics. In his first two seasons at Ogilvy Park, he was player-manager before another three as manager prior to retiring from football completely.
