Brian Mitchell

‘Gubby’ came through Arbroath Lads Club and signed his first professional contract in July 1984, five months after his 16th birthday. He made his debut that year and during his first two seasons in the first team he made sporadic appearances before beginning to nail down a regular spot under Jimmy Bone in January 1987. From then on, Brian became a mainstay of our defence and rarely missing a game a side from a four month spell out injured between November 1988 and March 1989. After over seven years regularly featuring, he was sold to Brechin City in October 1994 by manager George Mackie.

In early August 1997 new manager Dave Baikie signed Gubby back from Brechin City, and he would once again become a regular in our back line during the 1997-98 season. After a successful first season back, which saw the club win promotion from the Third Division, he suffered a bad injury early on the following campaign which would keep him out for almost a year. He returned for pre-season the following year prior to leaving the club for a second time and going on to have a brief spell with Montrose.

In 2019, Brian was voted into our Hall of Fame.
