Biography

William was signed from Forthill Athletic during the 1897-98 season after Joe McWattie's departure to Edinburgh, and he continued Arbroath's reputation for excellent goalkeepers, being picked for Forfarshire during the 1898-99 season, his first full campaign at Gayfield.

In March 1899 William, somewhat incredibly, turned down trials for Scotland due to them clashing with our game against Lochee in the Forfarshire County League, and he preferred to help his club on the day. It was around this time he started receiving offers from clubs in England, but he kept turning the offers down and continued at Gayfield up until late January 1901.

His time at Gayfield ended in a somewhat abrupt and sad manner, with a dispute regarding expenses and other minor fallings out seeing William stop playing for the club and focus on his work, until in July 1901 he signed professionally for New Brompton ahead of the 1901-02 season, turning down offers from Southampton, Chesterfield and Reading.
