Charles was persuaded to join back up at Gayfield and re-signed for the club for the 1902-03 season, playing almost every game in the first half of the campaign before a nasty injury sustained at the end of December 1902 resulting in him having to retire from the game through injury.

In 1905 he emigrated to Ohio, USA where he lived until his death in 1953.
