Biography

Bob, an Arbroath FC Hall of Famer and one of the most prominent figures in the club’s history, first featured in the 1894-95 season, his debut coming in a friendly on 13th April 1895 against Arbroath Wanderers, with a further friendly appearance following before he signed up at Gayfield permanently that summer from local side Albion Athletic.

The following season he established himself as our regular centre hald and in his second full season he started being picked for Forfarshire, his first cap coming in March 1897. Several months later, Bob was appointed club captain ahead of the 1897-98 season.

On 30th September 1897, he was married in Arbroath and after the following match against Montrose, a gathering was held in the Ship Inn where the players presented Bob with a clock and brooch.

At the age of only 23, Bob was appointed into the role of match secretary in the summer of 1898 alongside his captaincy role but a year later he resigned from both.

After half a dozen seasons as a pivotal player in the team, he began to suffer from injuries and on 2nd April 1903 he was again appointed as match secretary, replacing Richard David.

The following season saw Bob play only 8 competitive games and he retired that summer, however 3 years and 10 months after his last competitive appearance, he came into the side for a Northern League game against Lochee Utd in November 1907, deputising for Jim Taylor after he was ruled out at the last minute. Newspaper reports following the game suggest despite a lack of fitness, Bob was still a very useful footballer.

He continued in his match secretary role up until 1927 when he was appointed the clubs first official team manager role, which he remained in until 1946, resigning shortly after league football recommenced following the war.
