Biography

Bill continued the theme of promising goalkeepers at Gayfield when he started playing during the 1893-94 season, however he featured as a forward twice at the start of the 1894-95 season as well as playing as a full back on several other occasions, an outfield position which suited him far more.

He joined Leicester Fosse (later Leicester City) at the end of July of 1895; however, he returned to Gayfield the following year, his first game back being a friendly in September of 1896 against Mossend Swifts. Upon returning, he found the regular goalkeeping position taken by the outstanding George McWattie, and he featured as McWattie's understudy, before work commitments saw him unable to play during the second half of the 1897-98 season.

Bill’s work commitments, predominately in England, saw him play football rarely over the next few years but he was able to again sign on at Gayfield in early January 1902. He also made fleeting appearances at the end of the 1905-06 season and the start of the 1906-07 campaign before moving to Glasgow for work.
