Steven was initially signed by John McGlashan in early November 2008 on a month-long loan deal, which was further extended another month and during this time he made six appearances and scored two goals while mainly being used as a right wing back or right midfielder. He returned to the Saints in early January and after being released in May 2009 he was quickly signed up by us the following month.

He would go on to spend four years at Gayfield in his second spell at the club, and despite his first full season resulting in relegation from the Second Division this spell was hugely successful for both Steven and the club. After the appointment of Paul Sheerin in summer 2010, and the return of Gavin Swankie, the Doris/ Swankie front duo were lethal throughout the 2010-11 season, with Steven scoring 16 league goals as the club went on to win it’s first ever league title. In the following two seasons back in the Second Division, he was our top league goalscorer with 21 and 11 goals respectively, a memorable goal also coming at Parkhead in December 2012, as he scored a late equaliser from a free kick. His excellent form resulted in a trial with Birmingham City during the second half of the 2012-13 season, before he went on to join Dundee that summer.

At Dens Park his game time was limited, and he returned to Gayfield on loan in early December 2013, however he was restricted to just two games due to injury, and he returned to the Dark Blues for the second half of the campaign before leaving on a free transfer and signing for Stirling Albion in summer 2014. After two years at Forthbank, he returned for his fourth and final spell at Gayfield in June 2016, with recently appointed manager Dick Campbell securing his signature.

In his first season back, he scored 13 goals in the league to help us secure the League Two title, however early on the following campaign he suffered a cruciate ligament injury which would keep him out of action for over a year. He returned to action in mid-October 2018, making 20 appearances during the 2018-19 season and helping the club to our third title win, with Steven being involved in all three of them. The following campaign he struggled for fitness and game time, and in January 2020 he moved on to Forfar Athletic in a deal which saw Dale Hilson sign at Gayfield.

After two years at Station Park, with further injury struggles, he retired from playing football in January 2022. It took just three months from his retirement to him being inducted into the Arbroath FC Hall of Fame, a much-deserved honour.
