Biography

Jim was signed in June 1999 having previously spent two and a half seasons with Queen of the South. The former Doonhamer was a regular in the team when available in his first campaign, but suspensions and work commitments saw him restricted to 21 appearances before the following campaign he managed to feature much more regularly. He helped the club win promotion from the Second Division in the 2000-01 campaign before deciding to return to Queen of the South at the end of his contract.

Timeline

  • The first home friendly of the season had been turned into one of the semi finals of the 1999/2000 Forfarshire Cup but the importance of the match had no effect on my attendance as I was going anyway. Following an amazing January like hurricane of a night on Wednesday (it was too stormy today for the passengers on the QE2 to get off and enjoy the delights of Peterheid) the weather had abated as I bought a mealie pudding supper en route to Gayfield which ended up in the bin outside Tutties. The crack in Tutties was about whether or not "Fred" would or had signed for the Lichties, Dougie Scott had signed for Montrose on their third offer of allegedly £6k, East Fife had wanted over £40k for Moffat (Baikie’s striker target), Steve Mallan of QOS and Scott Taylor of Montrose had been Dave’s other summer targets and how Neil Thomson had said that he was not good enough to be a Second Division player.

  • Well it's been another interesting week again in the varied life of Arbroath Football Club. Last Saturday saw the Scottish Cup Third Round Tie at Gayfield against Motherwell abandoned at half-time due to the strong winds. There was no damage caused to the players in the first half due to the wind which, according to those in and on the ground, was starting to abate a bit at half-time and was it just a co-incidence that Motherwell played with the wind in the first half and had only a solitary wind assisted goal to show for it and were no doubt not relishing the thought of the second half playing against the wind. A superbly fine February Tuesday evening saw the game replayed and a great performance from the home team who fought out a 1-1 draw and with a bit of luck and some fresh legs at the end could have won the match against a disappointing Premier League outfit. Wednesday night saw a drastic change in fortunes when Gayfield was broken into, trashed and players kit from both the first and youth teams were stolen along with a signed commemorative jersey (the frame had been smashed to get the jersey) which had been given to Tommy Bryce to commemorate his 40th birthday a few days earlier. These items can only be of interest to Arbroath fans so lets put out the feeders that we will pay lots of dosh for a jersey then once baited let the police take over.

  • We approach today's game still having a sour taste in our mouths following Monday night's Arbroath Football Club's AGM where the President and Committee refused to bow to fans pressure to give the manager a contract despite Dave Baikie asking for one. We all know and appreciate the part which Sandy Law played during his short time on the committee and it is now up to the newer members on it (Mike Caird, Mike Leonard and Brian Lumgair) to carry on Sandy's revolutionary crusade. The old guard of John Christison, Charlie Kinnear, Alan Ripley, Bill Thomson, George Johnson and Dave Hodgens also need to recognise the fresh wind which Sandy blew into the club and liven up, get rid of the "exclusive drinking club" image, appreciate the members demands to ensure that monies for the youths go to the youths and realise that we now have the best manager since Albert Henderson and give him the contract which Dave and the fans want.

  • Last Appearance - Clydebank 3 - 1 Arbroath

After the unsurpassed joy of last Saturday, it was strange to wake up on a Saturday not worrying about the Arbroath game that afternoon. We had been forewarned that Brownlie, quite rightly, would field a lot of youngsters today. In my first match report I’d urged Brownlie to use the young guys and the development of them in the first team has been part of the good things promotion has brought. Dibble was also in line for a starting place for his last game. It also seems fitting that in a town where Tate + Lyle have a factory and Blacks make marquees that Steve Kirk was set to make a cameo appearance. Glorious sunshine covered Scotland as we headed down to Cappielow, Clydebank’s foster home.
