Biography

Darren came through our youth team, and he featured in pre-season friendlies as well as a Forfarshire Cup game during the 2001-02 season before breaking into the first team squad that summer ahead of the 2002-03 campaign. Prior to breaking into our first team, he had loan spells with Broughty Athletic and East Fife.

He made his league debut for the club off the bench against Ross County in early August 2002, our first game of the new season, and he followed this up with his first goal for the club for the following week against Alloa Athletic having once again appeared as a substitute. He would continue to feature regularly during the season, but after relegation to the Second Division he was released at the end of the campaign. He went on to join Montrose later that summer, spending two seasons with the Gable Endies before a spell with Carnoustie Panmure.

Forfarshire Cup (Semi Final)

Timeline

  • An injury ravaged Lichties side lost to Montrose in the semi final of the Forfarshire Cup on Monday 8th April at Links Park. In a team featuring first team players Fallon, Heenan, McGlashan and Roddie and a host of Under 18s, they lost 1 nil to our local neighbours who fielded most of their first team. In dreicht conditions Montrose had the better of the first half with Wight having to make a couple of great saves. Steele started the match but had to go off injured after 15 minutes or so - this could be a blow for Kevin as he has just returned after been out for around 6 months. The weather improving by half time allowing the Lichties support to stand on the uncovered grassy knoll behind the Montrose goal in the second half. The Lichties got things together after half time and entertained the away support but lost a late goal to go out of the Cup. It must be noted that Montrose had not replaced the Bovril, Tea and Pies with Champagne, Gin and Tonic and Salmon sandwiches out of respect for the QM.

  • First Goal - Alloa 0 - 3 Arbroath

Travelling down to Recreation Park for our first away game of the season, the talk on the supporters bus revolved around our injury worries and a mystery trialist, with Dunfermline connections, who was likely to feature during the afternoon. McGlashan and Cargill were definitely out and there was a question mark over Flo who we severely missed in our last games. There was hope that the performance against Alloa would be a significant improvement on our last 2 dreadful matches. On arrival at the ground it was surprising to find that there was no segregation in place – I thought that this was compulsory in the first division and several of the supporters voiced an opinion on the matter. The Lichties lined up as follows; Hinchcliffe, Tait, Florence, Mystery Trialist, Ritchie, Cusick, Brownlie, McAuley, McDowell, Henslee and Feroz. On the bench we had Gow, McInally, Heenan, Spink and Swankie. Surprisingly Currie did not feature in JB’s plans.

  • Battling Bairns clawed their way back to the top of the table thanks to a second half winner from old king goals Owen Coyle.

  • Last Appearance - Arbroath 0 - 1 Alloa

Despite the trials and tribulations of the last 9 months our intrepid reporter (and one of the few remaining supporters) was at Gayfield to file the following eye-witness report -
