Hugh was signed by Harry Cairney in July 2005, the central midfielder having previously been at Station Park for the past two seasons. He started off the campaign as a regular in the team before Cairney’s departure in late September saw his game time become less under new manager John McGlashan, and he was allowed to leave the club to join Montrose in mid-January. He would go on to spend over five seasons with the Links Park club prior to his retirement.

Arbroath 1 - 3 Stranraer
Scottish Challenge Cup (First Round)
A double from new signing David Hamilton propelled Stranraer into the second round of the Bell's Cup after a bruising encounter at Gayfield Park. Hamilton raced on to Paul Walker's through ball to chip the Arbroath goalkeeper to give Stranraer the lead. It was two when an Ian Ross corner deflected into the net off new Arbroath signing Hugh Davidson. Hamilton put the game beyond Arbroath with a wonderful long-range drive before Alan Brazil pulled one back.
A lacklustre display from the Lichties ended with a narrow win. The only goal came in 65mins when a Marc McCulloch cross from the right was headed to the back post by Alan Brazil for Hugh Davidson to hook the ball beyond goalkeeper John Dodds. It was Davidson’s first counter since moving from Forfar in the summer and it was Arbroath 100th home league goal against East Fife.
There was to be no repeat of the glorious win over Hibs in the 1977 Scottish Cup as the Easter Road side scored their biggest ever victory over the Lichties. The visitors held out for 39mins before Scott Brown fired the Edinburgh side into the lead. Ivan Sproule added another before the interval to end any lingering Arbroath hopes of salvaging something from the game. Hibs total domination of the second period was reflected in a further four strikes hitting the back of the Arbroath net, and had it not been for some fine shot stopping by Mark Peat the final tally might have been even higher. Arbroath were restricted to just a couple of attempts on goal throughout the ninety minutes. At least the club treasurer will be happy with a share of the gate money.
