Mark Whatley

Mark was initially signed by Paul Sheerin in summer 2014, just prior to the managers move to Aberdeen, with the defensive midfielder having previously been with Spartans for two seasons. He featured in every single league and cup game during the 2014-15 campaign, helping the club to a 3rd placed finish in League Two before being appointed captain by Todd Lumsden ahead of the following season. A difficult year saw the team finish second bottom, however with Dick Campbell appointed towards the end of the season the following campaign saw us win the League Two title, with Mark playing ever game bar one as captain.

He continued as our regular captain over the next two seasons in League One, beginning to be used more at full back as well as his regular central midfield role, with the 2018-19 season seeing Mark lift the League One trophy. The following campaign was cut short due to a global pandemic, and although the captaincy was given to Tam O’Brien early in the season Mark was still a regular fixture in the team, starting all but four games. In total, he was our captain in 160 competitive games, lifting both the League Two and League One trophies.

Mark’s final season at the club saw him injured at the start of pre-season, the former captain missing the opening months of an already shortened campaign. He never managed to fully break back into the team, being restricted to just six appearances, and he left the club at the end of the 2020-21 season, going on to sign for Montrose that summer.
