Towards the end of the 1951-52 campaign, he began to receive less game time, and he refused the offer of a new contract that summer, but the club retained him and refused him a free transfer. He spent five months playing in England with Headington United before an appeal was heard by the Scottish League Committee and he was granted a free transfer in late November 1952, signing for Dumbarton the following month.
