Tommy Hughes

Tommy was provisionally signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1961, the 17-year-old having only recently stepped up from amateur to junior level, and he stayed with his junior club up until mid-March when he was called up to make his debut against Brechin City in a Division Two game. After putting in an impressive performance, he remained the starting left back for the rest of the campaign.

Tommy kept his spot for the start of the 1962-63 season and he spent the rest of the 1960s as one of the first names on the team sheet. During this time, although usually featuring at left back, he was also used as a left half and an outside left, where he played for most of the promotion winning 1967-68 season, before reverting to his left back role the following campaign.

After over nine years as a regular in the team, he lost his place early in the 1971-72 season, and in early October 1971 he left the club by mutual consent, and he went on to emigrate to Australia the following year.
