Ian spent three seasons at Gayfield in total, with his game time diminishing over that period, and after mainly being used as a substitute during the 1977-78 and 1978-79 seasons, only making 7 appearances in the latter and spending a chunk of it on loan at Brechin City he was released at the end of the campaign. After his release he would go on to have a successful career throughout the 1980s and early 1990s in the Highland League.
