John came through Arbroath Lads Club, and he made his first appearance for the first team as a substitute against Brechin City in a Second Division game in September 1971. His second appearance came from the start against Albion Rovers in December, and from then on, he started every game for the rest of the 1971-72 season.

After missing the first few months of the following campaign due to a broken wrist sustained that summer, he struggling to regain his starting place, but he hit the ground running at the start of the 1973-74 season, and from then on in up until the end of the 1978-79 season he was a regular starter.

In May 1979, he made a transfer request, citing a want to play full time football and saying he had been unhappy with his performances that season and felt a change of club may help his game. Two months later a bid from Dundee of £20,000 was accepted and John moved on to Dens Park ahead of the 1979-80 season.
