Jim was signed by Ian Stewart in late January 1981 from Phoenix Inferno for £10,000, the former Celtic man having only moved to the United States two months prior for a fee double what was paid to bring him to Gayfield. He played regularly until autumn that year before dropping out the team due to work restrictions making him unable to make training and in early-December he was transfer listed by the club and eventually suspended without pay due to the ongoing dispute. Over a year after his last game, the things between Jim and the club were finally resolved and he returned to training and once again was a regular fixture in the team for several months before an injury ended his season early and he was given a free transfer in July 1983.
