Biography

James, commonly known as Monty, initially started playing with Dundee Elmwood while still a pupil at Morgan Academy. After impressing in the juniors, he was signed by Dundee in August 1931 and he spent two years at Dens Park, featuring regularly in his second season before joining Dundee Utd where he stayed until February 1934. He had a brief spell with East Fife towards the end of the 1933-34 campaign before signing up at Gayfield that summer.

He was given a run in the team at the start of the campaign, but he began to feature less by mid-October and after another small run of games in November he didn't feature further and left the club in the New Year. He would go on to feature for Dundee Anchorage during the 1935-36 season up until he passed away in January 1936, having collapsed on a tram.
