Biography

John was signed from Fairfield early on during the 1911-12 season and he quickly established himself as a key player in the team, featuring as both a left and centre half in the team over the next two seasons. He was picked for Forfarshire in March 1913 but just a few months later he left the club and planned to move to America, however this never materialised, and he went on to sign for Dundee A.

During war time John played regularly for Dundee's first team up until they ceased playing competitive football in the summer of 1917. Once the war ended, he played for us in the friendlies of spring 1919 before signing for Dundee Hibs that summer ahead of competitive football re-commencing. In the summer of 1921, he signed up again at Gayfield for our first Scottish League campaign and he was a regular starter during the season, but he left at the end of the 1921-22 campaign.

Football very much ran in the Stirling family, with John's brother Willie playing for the club between 1907 and 1910 and his father John playing in the early to mid-1880s.
