Steven Whittaker switched up his starting XI for the away trip to Championship side Arbroath, handing starts to the likes of Thomas, Waugh and Dobbie. The match provided another opportunity to give valuable minutes to several players ahead of the William Hill League Two campaign getting underway next weekend.
The Binos made a bright start at Gayfield, with the travelling support in fine voice from the opening whistle. Stirling created the first opportunity of the afternoon as Wright looked to find Allan just minutes into the match.
As the final 20 minutes of the first half approached, Allan had another chance, attempting to flick the ball over McAdams, who did well to get a hand to it. The loose ball fell kindly to Wright, who delivered a cross towards Fyfe, creating another promising opportunity for the visitors.
Shortly afterwards, Sean Mackie replaced the injured Brady Paterson for Arbroath.
McNab then drove forward down the right-hand side before finding Thomas, whose cross into the box gave Stirling another opportunity to break the deadlock before the interval.
Arbroath nearly took the lead 15 minutes before half-time when McGill met a cross with a header, but McNeil produced an excellent save to keep the scores level.
The home side won a number of corners in the closing stages of the first half, but Banner and Crane marshalled the defence well to ensure the Binos reached the break on level terms after an evenly contested opening 45 minutes.
Half-time: Arbroath 0-0 Stirling Albion
Stirling started the second half positively, with both Dobbie and Allan testing McAdams early after the restart.
McGill threatened again at the other end inside the opening five minutes of the half, but Banner made an important block to divert the effort away from danger.
Whittaker made his first changes in the 56th minute, introducing Russell McLean and Mark Russell in place of Murray Thomas and Lucas Fyfe.
Arbroath responded with a substitution of their own as Cormac Daly replaced Scott McGill.
The breakthrough came just before the hour mark when Ryan Dow capitalised on an unfortunate defensive mistake to put the home side in front.
Dow nearly doubled Arbroath’s advantage moments later, but McNeil made a good save before Stirling cleared the danger and earned a goal kick.
Whittaker continued to freshen up his side as Barry Hepburn and Zeke Cameron replaced Harry Wright and Jordan Allan, before Robin Raine came on for Kevin Waugh four minutes later.
McLean then tried his luck from distance with a powerful strike that looked destined for goal before an Arbroath defender headed the ball behind for a Stirling corner.
The hosts made further changes as Gavin Reilly and David Gold replaced Andrew Winter and Scott Constable.
With the final 10 minutes approaching, Raine won a free-kick in a dangerous position. Dobbie delivered into the box, but Stirling were unable to make the most of the opportunity.
McLean had another excellent chance late on after an Arbroath mistake presented him with what looked like a simple finish, but the Binos were still unable to find an equaliser.
Stirling’s task became even harder in the closing moments when Hepburn pulled up injured while chasing the leveller. Having already used all of their substitutions, the Binos were forced to see out the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Despite an encouraging performance and a number of promising chances, Stirling were unable to find a way back into the game as Arbroath held on to claim a 1-0 victory.
Full-time: Arbroath 1-0 Stirling Albion
