Match Report

Arbroath extended their undefeated away run, despite playing the final 21 minutes with 10 men as the officials left both managers raging with anger at the full time whistle.

The torrential rain that had hit Arbroath and the south of Scotland hadn't quite made it to Elgin, and despite it being wet and soggy the Borough Briggs pitch looked in great condition before kick off.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell kept faith in the same 11 that started against Cowdenbeath, with the only absentee from the squad being Josh Skelly who was injured on Tuesday playing for the Dundee U20s, but David Gold returned to take his place on the bench.

Elgin were dealt a major blow as they were without influential striker Shane Sutherland for the second Saturday in succession due to injury.

Arbroath made a strong start and were in control for the opening period as Elgin seemed to struggle with Sutherland’s absence as they continued to be caught offside and wasteful in their balls over the top.

Bobby Linn almost got a cross to Martin Scott at the front post but keeper Cammy Mackay just beat Scott to the ball.

Referee Mat Northcroft booked Colin Hamilton for his first foul as the Arbroath defender seemed to pull down Chris McLeish as he surged forward. From the resulting free kick Ricky Gomes made a great save as he was forced to punch away the Archie MacPhee free kick.

Bobby Linn popped up on the right wing and again put in a cross but this time the defender just cleared as Steven Doris was about to pull the trigger.

The Lichties had a great chance when a Bobby Linn free kick from the left found its way to the back post where Martin Scott was lurking, however Scott seemed to be surprised that the ball wasn’t cleared before it reached him and his effort was over the bar.

The Lichties continued to press and Mark Whatley flashed a shot across goal before trying a header from another Linn cross.

As the game progressed the weather conditions seem to worsen as the light rain at kick off soon was lashing down to make things harder for both teams.

Ricky Gomes produced another fine save as Chris Dodd struck from distance before a Darryl McHardy cross struck the top of the Arbroath crossbar.

Bobby Linn was looking in the mood and was denied again in the 41st minute as Cammy MacKay saved Linn’s effort from a tight angle. From the resulting corner Ricky Little also picked up a yellow card as he slid in to try and win the ball from Chris McLeish.

Half time - Elgin City 0 - 0 Arbroath

The second half was in it’s infancy when referee Mat Northcroft was caught up in his first major incident of the afternoon. Craig Gunn was released and was running straight towards Ricky Gomes when Colin Hamilton made a lunging dive for the ball which resulted in Arbroath winning posssession and Gunn falling to the soggy pitch.

Play raced on but the home fans clearly weren’t impressed neither was Elgin City manager Jim Weir who was pulled aside and spoken too after the ball went out of play.

It clearly will be watched in slow motion when the video highlights are released, but going by the reaction of Arbroath’s Bryan Hodge who was running back with Hamilton he seemed to acknowledge Hamilton for making a tackle.

Arbroath almost got the opening goal but Elgin’s keeper Cammy Mackay did brilliantly to tip a Ryan McCord header onto the bar.

Bobby Linn did have the ball in the back of the net but his shot from just outside the box was flagged for offside, which must have been a very close call.

Jassem Sukar made a flying block as Chris Dodd broke free and shot at goal as the game was racing from end to end. Cammy Mackay made another super save as he punched away an Arbroath corner which was creeping into the top corner.

Gavin Malin was replaced by Omar Kader in the 61st minute and a few minutes later Elgin replaced Chris Dodd with Daniel Moore.

Archie MacPhee was the next player into the referee’s notebook as he pulled down Omar Kader as the substitute showed off his pace as he MacPhee forced him down.

From the free kick the game had another major turning point. As the free kick was half cleared Ricky Little ran in to strike the ball at goal, at the same time that Bryan Hodge slid in and tackled Chris McLeish.

Despite being on the tightrope of already having a yellow card, the referee seemed to award a free kick but not award Little his second card.

The Elgin players were soon in a gang surrounding Referee Northcroft however he seemed satisfied with his decision.

However before play could continue the far stand linesman had his flag up and after a brief discussion referee Northcroft marched over to Little and flashed a straight red card for violent conduct.

Arbroath introduced Matty Smyth for Martin Scott in the 72nd minute to shore up the defence with Mark Whatley moving back to fill in at right back. The dismissal seemed to fire up the Lichties as they pushed Elgin and in the 78th minute Omar Kader slid a tempting ball across the Elgin goal and there seemed to be an appeal for a penalty as Ryan McCord who seemed destined to push the ball into the empty net was pushed over.

Steven Doris picked up a yellow card for a striker’s tackle on Darryl McHardy as he tried to win back possession. Alisdair Sutherland came on for Chris McLeish with 10 minutes remaining as Elgin pushed for a goal.

Colin Hamilton tried to clear a MacPhee cross but with the wet, wet conditions the ball sliced off his boot over the Arbroath goal for a corner kick.

Elgin just couldn’t get a shot on target as Arbroath defended in numbers and with a final throw of the dice Eddie Ferns was brought on for Steven Doris with 3 minutes remaining as Arbroath pushed on the counter attack. It almost worked too as twice Linn broke free and had one cross into the box cleared before he found the side netting deep in injury time.

Full time - Elgin City 0 - 0 Arbroath

As the players left the muddy pitch both managers were furious and didn’t hold back on letting the officials know exactly how they felt in regards to the Gunn / Hamilton penalty and the McLeish / Little sending off.

However as Forfar and Clyde played out a 2-2 draw a point at one of the toughest away grounds in the league, Arbroath did well to secure a point with 10 men.

The big games keep coming as Clyde visit Gayfield on Saturday.
